“Doctors from Down Under”

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

I feel special. As a medical student studying in Australia, I am a rare commodity on this website and have been asked to share my experiences and knowledge with all. First off, the way the med system works in Australia is different to the US. We don’t really have premed, we have a dual system of undergraduate and postgraduate medicine. And our specialisation system is a little different – we use similar words – resident, intern, slave (ahem), but they take on different meanings in Australia. Anyway, that stuff is boring so if you want, you can PM me and I’ll go into it in more detail.

I am a first year postgraduate student at the Australian National University in Canberra. My first degree was a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology and Chemistry, and the medical course at ANU is a four year course. I guess I’ve always wanted to study medicine – there are pictures I drew when I was 6 of doctors, nurses and hospitals…so I always had the urge. At the moment, I am interested in both urology and anaesthetics (anaesthesiology for you), but, I can imagine that this is going to change by the time I finish. Ok so I realise that the picture of me is a little bit shifty/dodgy, but there’s a story behind it. It was taken this year at the Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) Annual Convention – a fantastic week of drinking, socialising and academic events. As a representative of AMSA for my university (Australian National University), let me be the first to invite you to next year’s convention, in the lovely city of Adelaide. For more information, see the AMSA website (www.amsa.org.au) or PM me.

Turkey’s Gonna Getcha!

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Well it’s that time of the year again, ah yes, I can see it now. People hugging, turkeys roasting, cranberry sauce on the white table cloth, cousins catching up. Lots of dishes and wine glasses in the aftermath. It’s a great holiday.

I think my fondest memories are of Thanksgivings. It always seems like the best discussions surface when you get a moment with an uncle, or a close cousin you haven’t seen in awhile.

Tiromed wishes everyone a hearty, raucous and tipsy Thanksgiving. Relax, get extroverted and dig the people around you (no matter who they are, on T-day they’re family!).

Sincerely,

-Team Tiromed

“I had a dream that one day I would be a Doctor”

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

I am not the usual premed student. In high school, I did very well in science and computers. When I got into college, I was going to get a degree in computer programming. During my first semester, I got a job in the school computer programming office. I worked with a computer programmer in little cubicle, which was very dark and isolated. The computer programmer I worked with drank about 20 cokes and screamed all the time because of the frustration of trying to solve problems with the programs he created. After that rude awakening, I decided I wasn’t going to be a computer programmer. After two years into college, I decided to change my major and begin my premed college career. I am a first generation American and out of all my siblings, I am the only one that has a college degree. My parents are from the land of reggae and jerk chicken, which is Jamaica. The reason why I want to be a doctor is to make a difference in my community. A lot of people are dying because they lack education in disease prevention. I want be a role model for my peers and also educate them, so becoming a doctor is the alternative mode for me at this point. If all else fails, becoming a doctor will be a dream I will continue to pursue.

It took us about a month to come up with the Tiromed logo. We knew from the start that it should be a caduceus, but we had some trouble getting the feel of it. “Do we go conservative, with a traditional caduceus?” “Should we put a futuristic 3D spin on it?” “Do we go for minimalism, abstraction?” These were some of the questions we asked ourselves.

In the end, our current logo had true staying power. Sure, we wrangled over whether the wings should have two peaks or three, but these were just the fine points.

So now, after creating a logo masterpiece, we are mailing out FREE t-shirts to our members!

Say wha? Yah, you heard me . . . FREE.

All members who promote Tiromed on any student/physician listserv, or who promote Tiromed on the internet get shirts (for a limited time! act now!).

Just let us know who you are! We’ll mail them out promptly :)
