MemberSpotlight: “Greetings Fellow Tiromeds!”

Friday, December 8th, 2006

My name is Jon Elliott and am a pre-med student at the University of Oregon. This will be my senior year, but plan on joining the titular club of “super seniors” after next year. Medicine has not always been a life long ambition of mine, instead my dream was to become an architect. Fortunately, I realized my true calling after only one year in the architecture department. Currently, I am on track to graduate with a degree in human physiology and minors in biochemistry and biology. My MCAT preparation is in high gear right now, and plan to take the exam sometime in april. As of now I am drawn to the osteopathic philosophy, but will undoubtably apply to allopathic schools as well. Between school and work I stay fairly busy, but always make time for exercise and my social life. It is my personal belief that physical fitness is a prerequisite for a clear and rational mind, something often overlooked.

“Doctors from Down Under”

I feel special. As a medical student studying in Australia, I am a rare commodity on this website and have been asked to share my experiences and knowledge with all. First off, the way the med system works in Australia is different to the US. We don’t really have premed, we have a dual system of undergraduate and postgraduate medicine. And our specialisation system is a little different – we use similar words – resident, intern, slave (ahem), but they take on different meanings in Australia. Anyway, that stuff is boring so if you want, you can PM me and I’ll go into it in more detail.

I am a first year postgraduate student at the Australian National University in Canberra. My first degree was a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biology and Chemistry, and the medical course at ANU is a four year course. I guess I’ve always wanted to study medicine – there are pictures I drew when I was 6 of doctors, nurses and hospitals…so I always had the urge. At the moment, I am interested in both urology and anaesthetics (anaesthesiology for you), but, I can imagine that this is going to change by the time I finish. Ok so I realise that the picture of me is a little bit shifty/dodgy, but there’s a story behind it. It was taken this year at the Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) Annual Convention – a fantastic week of drinking, socialising and academic events. As a representative of AMSA for my university (Australian National University), let me be the first to invite you to next year’s convention, in the lovely city of Adelaide. For more information, see the AMSA website (www.amsa.org.au) or PM me.

“I had a dream that one day I would be a Doctor”

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

I am not the usual premed student. In high school, I did very well in science and computers. When I got into college, I was going to get a degree in computer programming. During my first semester, I got a job in the school computer programming office. I worked with a computer programmer in little cubicle, which was very dark and isolated. The computer programmer I worked with drank about 20 cokes and screamed all the time because of the frustration of trying to solve problems with the programs he created. After that rude awakening, I decided I wasn’t going to be a computer programmer. After two years into college, I decided to change my major and begin my premed college career. I am a first generation American and out of all my siblings, I am the only one that has a college degree. My parents are from the land of reggae and jerk chicken, which is Jamaica. The reason why I want to be a doctor is to make a difference in my community. A lot of people are dying because they lack education in disease prevention. I want be a role model for my peers and also educate them, so becoming a doctor is the alternative mode for me at this point. If all else fails, becoming a doctor will be a dream I will continue to pursue.

“Call Me Al”

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

My name is Al Feucht. I am an OMS I at the Edward Via Virginia Collegeof Osteopathic Medicine. I come here from Murfreesboro, TN where my immediate family lives now. I am a native of Colorado Springs, CO. I majored in biology at Middle Tennessee State University. After abandoning marketing and pre-pharmacy as majors, I decided to call an old family friend: Walter Watts DO. He told me about practicing medicine in a PC field was his dream come true. I had flirted with the idea but know I was determined. I applied to several schools in the east, and VCOM was the right match. I have interests in Pediatrics, Pediatric immunology, and pain management using Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine as an adjunct treatment modality (especially for those with Chiropractic riders on their insurance).

“From Russia with Love”

Hello. My name is Karina and I will be starting medical school in August 2007. I came to the United States from St. Petersburg, Russia when I was eleven years old. I have been interested in science from a young age and I began to study medicine at the Academy for Medical Science Technology, a magnet high school in northern NJ. After graduating from Wesleyan University with a BA in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry I decided to take a couple off years to work in a laboratory and recharge my batteries. After a wonderful break I am happy and excited to go back to school. Currently I am interested in becoming a primary care physician. I have many interests outside of medicine and not enough time to keep up with all of them. I especially love sports such as tennis and rock climbing and on most days after work I can be found at the gym. (view Karina’s profile)
